The Friends of LBA Woods is a volunteer stewardship group devoted to the restoration of wildlife habitat in the LBA Woods and to advocating for the protection and enhancement of the park for our community.
LBA Woods is the 133-acre wooded portion of the LBA Park & Woods, a city park in southeast Olympia, Washington. The main park entrances are at 3333 Morse-Merryman Rd. and 3500 Amhurst St. To locate additional pedestrian-bicycle entrances, consult the Park Map.
Last Friday, the Thurston Regional Planning Council (TRPC) gave the "thumbs up" to removing the Log Cabin Road Extension from the draft Regional Transportation Plan and passed this guidance to their advisory board, the Transportation Policy Board (TPB) to discuss this past Wednesday.
Unfortunately, no real discussion occurred due to the filibuster by the TPB board chair (a proponent of the Log Cabin Extension Road through the LBA Woods). Instead, the chair announced that the board wasn’t ready to make a decision and would resume their “discussion” at their July 9 meeting.
And while TRPC–not the TPB– has the last word on this issue, a show of community support for the TRPC’s guidance would help ensure the Log Cabin Road is removed from the Regional Transportation Plan without obstruction from the TPB.
There are several easy options to show your support.
On Tuesday, June 17, all three cities (Lacey, Tumwater, and Olympia)and the Board of County Commissioners hold their regular meetings. Members of the TRPC and TPB serve on these councils. You can reach all of them by email, by Zoom, or in person on or before June 17 and tell them…
Your name, your city of residence, and your topic (the draft Regional Transportation Plan) and this statement: I support the guidance of the TRPC to remove the Log Cabin Connection Road from the draft Regional Transportation Plan. The Transportation Policy Board should honor the guidance of the TRPC and respect the transportation goals and planning process of the City of Olympia.
You can vary the wording if you like but keep it short so more people can comment. Though you may be tempted, do not use your few minutes to express your love for the LBA Woods or the folly of the proposed Log Cabin Road Connection. We rocked that last month! Your comments this time should support the city council members who also serve on the TRPC and who gave a thoughtful “thumbs up” to removing the road from the plan.
