The Friends of LBA Woods is a volunteer stewardship group devoted to the restoration of wildlife habitat in the LBA Woods and to advocating for the protection and enhancement of the park for our community.

LBA Woods is the 133-acre wooded portion of the LBA Park & Woods, a city park in southeast Olympia, Washington. The main park entrances are at 3333 Morse-Merryman Rd. and 3500 Amhurst St. To locate additional pedestrian-bicycle entrances, consult the Park Map.

LBA Woods News

THE LATEST: We’ve just launched our new website to share with you the history of the LBA Woods and Park, map of the new trail network, special events, flora & fauna, action alerts, and other goings on. Use the menu at the top of this page to take a look around. We’ll provide news here on the website and via our periodic newsletters via email: sign up here to receive. We won’t inundate your inbox or share your email address. We’ll always post old-fashioned paper fliers at the wooden signposts at trailhead entrances in the LBA Woods for time-sensitive news.

ON THE TRAILS: The woods are lush and lovely right now and the trails are dry. If you’ve haven’t explored the newly signed trails, you can view/download the trails map here and explore the four-plus miles of trails. Migratory songbirds are abundant right now and many birds are busy building nests. This is prime time to see the white flowers (pictured here) of the tall shrub known as Serviceberry (also known as Saskatoon). Our popular guided nature walks will return in June. Stay tuned!

STOP THE ROAD: Thanks to everyone who took the time to submit comment letters to the Thurston Regional Planning Council on removing the proposed Log Cabin Road Extension from draft regional transportation plan. Word of the public comment opportunity spread quickly through our posted fliers and word of mouth, resulting in our elected officials hearing our Stop the Road message loud and clear. Please see the Stop the Road tab on our website for background on this issue.

Here are the next steps in the process to adopt the Regional Transportation Plan:

  • June 6th: Thurston Regional Planning Council’s review of the transportation plan. This will include a review of public comments received and how the draft was updated to respond to them.

  • June 11th: Transportation Policy Board recommendation. This will include a review of public comments received and how the draft was updated to respond to them.

  • July 11th: Thurston Regional Planning Council’s final action on the Regional Transportation Plan.

We will be tracking this issue closely and will be planning a strategy meeting in the coming weeks to organize our LBA Woods park-goers for our campaign to Stop the Road.

Now, it’s time to get outside!
